Plans to redevelop Wigan’s landmark Victorian Mill into a multi-purpose venue

Redevelopment in Wigan will continue, with the Eckersley Mill and Swan Meadow development set to become ‘The Jewel in the Crown”.

The Victorian mill, located on Swan Meadow Road within the Wigan Pier Quarter, ceased production in the early 1970s. Since then, it has fallen into disrepair. Recently, the state of the disused mill forced Wigan Council to demolish some unsafe areas of the site and meant that many businesses had to be evacuated.

However, this is all set to change now that Heaton Group has taken over ownership of the complex, with ambitious plans to restore it into a multi-purpose space.

Dating back to the turn of the last century, this former cotton mill complex has become a landmark within the town and acts as a symbol of its industrial past.

The Heaton Group plans to transform Eckersley Mill into a new, iconic, destination for the town, providing world-class amenities including commercial, residential and retail spaces.

Plans for the 1m sq ft Mill include 315 homes, offices, commercial and cultural facilities, a new hotel, cafés, and restaurants. There are also ambitions for a new arts centre, improved access including new access roads and elevators and enhanced security. The hope is to contribute to Wigan’s levelling up ambitions and create a vibrant new destination for people to live, work and visit.

Across the North West, The Heaton Group has a reputation for restoring buildings of significant importance, and this project is no exception. Throughout the development, it’s hoped that the Grade II-listed mill can retain as much history and character as possible, reflecting Wigan’s industrial past.

Wigan is currently undergoing a lot of regeneration including a complete transformation of the town centre and development around the Wigan Pier area. It is hoped that this project will bring something special to the town.

The Heaton Group will work with the town’s residents and existing businesses when creating their vision for the development, to create a space which works for everyone. They hope to retain the businesses and tenants that are already based at Eckersley Mills.
